Unmasking "Sidekick" Masculinity: A Qualitative Investigation of How Asian-American Males View Emasculating Stereotypes in U.S. Media

*Dissertation written for Global Media & Communications M.A. at the London School of Economics. My dissertation was subsquently chosen as one of the 20 best dissertations out of 220 submitted to the postgraduation communications department and published as part of the MEDIA@LSE MSc Dissertation Series

The martial arts master, the socially awkward nerd, the scrawny restaurant owner with a comical accent—within mainstream media, Asian-American males have historically been Othered and excluded. Through these restrictive stereotypes, American media has relegated Asian-American men to little more than submissive model minorities or foreign caricatures to be laughed at. These effeminate portrayals, while widely accepted as harmless, arguably deny this minority group of their masculinity.

This paper sought to explore how Asian-American males perceive stereotypical media portrayals of themselves in relation to their identity and masculinity and conversely, how they construct identity and masculinity in relation to emasculating media representations. Through semi-structured interviews, this research explored the inner worlds and life narratives of 23 Asian-American men. Using thematic analysis, I found that Asian-American men by and large negatively view and reject media’s emasculating images of themselves and find resistance in choosing to assert their masculinity and identity in other ways. Nonetheless, as identity is not produced in a vacuum, but is socially recognized position, Asian-American men suffer from being ascribed unwanted identities out of their control.

Homosexuality in China
In China, where tradition reigns, homosexuality is no longer taboo. What is the view from those living in the country?
US-China Today
March 10, 2010

Wrote in-depth feature article on evolving attitudes toward homosexuality in China, interviewing sources ranging from LGBT activists to academics as well as those dealing personally with being gay in Chin. It subsequently became one of the key sources of traffic to the US-China Today site and was the #2 result on Google for the topic "homosexuality in China." Since then, it has been cited in two books and several papers published in academic journals, including:
